My work life in the field of Virology began more than 26 years ago with two of important research institutes under the aegis of Indian Council of Medical Research; earlier with National AIDS Research Institute and currently with National Institute of Virology (ICMR-NIV). At ICMR-NIV, I predominantly worked/work on diagnostics and vaccine candidates development for hepatitis E (HE). Vaccine candidates were developed using different approaches (DNA, DNA Prime Protein Boost, Protein) employing different adjuvants (alum, liposomes, genetic) and tested preclinically. Recently we developed a HE diagnostic lateral flow based immunochromatographic strip test, which will be very useful in rapid differential diagnosis of acute viral hepatitis under resource limited settings and subsequent effective management of hepatitis outbreaks.
